Your guide to what the 2024 US election means for Washington and the world
It’s cool to idly open up a social-media platform Friday night to find a bunch of people asking whether the president-elect of the United States was hacked three days before his inauguration.
They were asking because of this post:
Note: These are not technically coins, they’re memes, which is what crypto platform Moonshot calls its shitcoins.
The post was on TruthSocial, a platform majority owned by US President-elect Donald Trump, which was taken public through a Spac last year. Since then, Trump’s account has posted about a cabinet pick. So it seems fairly safe to guess that it was not, in fact, hacked.
Trump has sold sneakers, watches, jewellery and a $60 Bible in the months leading up to the election, as MainFT ably reported. He also promoted a platform called “World Liberty Financial” and its token.
The World Liberty Financial token was sold to institutional cryptocurrency players — MainFT covered its mid-October token offering to qualified (ie high net worth or institutional) investors — but this meme-token-coin thing seems focused on retail.
According to the website, the memes cards shitcoins tokens are not an investment, not an investment contract, not a security, and have “nothing to do with any political campaign or any political office or governmental agency”. OK!
An affiliate of The Trump Organization will get revenue “derived from the trading activities” of tokens/memes/cards/shitcoins/etc:
Trump Memes are intended to function as an expression of support for, and engagement with, the ideals and beliefs embodied by the symbol “$TRUMP” and the associated artwork, and are not intended to be, or to be the subject of, an investment opportunity, investment contract, or security of any type. GetTrumpMemes.com is not political and has nothing to do with any political campaign or any political office or governmental agency. CIC Digital LLC, an affiliate of The Trump Organization, and Fight Fight Fight LLC collectively own 80% of the Trump Cards, subject to a 3-year unlocking schedule. CIC Digital LLC and Celebration Cards LLC, the owners of Fight Fight Fight LLC, will receive trading revenue derived from trading activities of Trump Meme Cards. Oh and if you buy, you agree to give up the ability to join a class-action lawsuit against the company, according to the Terms and Conditions, unless you give “written notice of your decision within thirty (30) days of the date that you first access the Website”.
Cool, sure. “— Have Fun!”
