Ethereum launches the Pectra Audit Competition on Cantina, focusing on enhancing blockchain security with key EIPs. The event runs from February 21 to March 24.

The Ethereum Foundation has announced the commencement of the Pectra Audit Competition on Cantina, an initiative aimed at bolstering blockchain security. This month-long event, which runs from February 21 to March 24, invites the security community to identify vulnerabilities within the Pectra code, according to the Ethereum blog.

Why Pectra Matters

Pectra introduces significant enhancements to Ethereum’s infrastructure, particularly through the implementation of several Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs). Key among these is EIP-7702, which upgrades Externally Owned Accounts (EOAs) with smart contract capabilities, offering benefits like transaction batching, gas sponsorship, alternative authentication, spending controls, and enhanced recovery mechanisms.

Validator UX Improvements

Several EIPs aim to improve user experience for validators. EIP-7251 increases the maximum validator balance from 32 ETH to 2048 ETH, facilitating automatic reward compounding and validator consolidation. EIP-7002 allows Ethereum addresses to trigger validator exits, reducing reliance on validator keys. Additionally, EIP-6110 significantly reduces deposit processing times from approximately nine hours to just 13 minutes.

Blob Scaling and Future Enhancements

EIP-7691 addresses blob scaling by increasing Ethereum’s blob capacity by 50%, which is crucial for Layer 2 proofs and reduces Layer 1 fees significantly. Future improvements will focus on data sampling techniques to optimize storage requirements.

Scope of the Audit

The audit competition specifically targets the Pectra code. Discoveries unrelated to Pectra should be reported via the Ethereum Foundation’s Bounty Program. This focus aims to identify potential issues before the mainnet hard fork.

Recent Security Initiatives

The Ethereum Protocol Attackathon, recently concluded on Immunefi, showcased the community’s commitment to blockchain security. Supported by major ecosystem contributors like Bybit, Wormhole, and Arbitrum Foundation, the event highlighted collective efforts towards a resilient blockchain infrastructure.

Participants interested in the Pectra Audit Competition can begin their journey on Cantina’s competition page. For reporting vulnerabilities outside the competition, the Ethereum Foundation’s Bug Bounty Program remains available.
