KeyTakeaways:
Ethereum Foundation launches Silviculture Society to uphold core principles like privacy and security. EF donates $1.25M to support Tornado Cash developer Alexey Pertsev’s legal defense. Aya Miyaguchi transitions to president, focusing on Ethereum’s long-term vision and decentralization.
The Ethereum Foundation (EF) has established the Silviculture Society, a new advisory group to reinforce the organization’s commitment to Ethereum’s core principles. Comprising 15 blockchain experts, the society is designed to provide informal counsel to the foundation, ensuring its efforts remain aligned with values like open-source development, privacy, security, and resistance to censorship.
The Silviculture Society includes renowned figures from the blockchain space, such as Synthetix contributor @llamaonthebrink, Web3 security researcher @alpeh_v, Golem Foundation co-founder Julian Zawistowski, and Sigil NFT developer @Enoch. Kassandra, co-founder and CTO of Arrakis Finance is another notable member. These experts are expected to offer insights to help guide Ethereum’s future developments.

In a statement, the Ethereum Foundation emphasized that Ethereum’s success hinges on having a committed group of developers who prioritize these values. Many of the appointed experts expressed enthusiasm about their new roles, with some members noting their excitement about collaborating with people they had previously worked with.
Ethereum Foundation’s Donation to Tornado Cash Developer
In a related development, the Ethereum Foundation has announced a $1.25 million donation to support the legal defense of Alexey Pertsev, a developer associated with Tornado Cash. The privacy tool, which enables users to send Ethereum anonymously, was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury in 2022 due to its alleged use in illicit activities, including transactions linked to North Korean hackers.
The Ethereum Foundation reiterated its stance on software development as a fundamental right, asserting that “writing code is not a crime.” The organization’s support for Pertsev highlights its ongoing commitment to digital privacy and the broader civil liberties issue within the blockchain space.
EF Executive Director Aya Miyaguchi Takes on New Role
EF’s executive director, Aya Miyaguchi, is transitioning to a newly created position as president of the Ethereum Foundation. In her new role, Miyaguchi will focus on expanding EF’s institutional relationships and advancing Ethereum’s long-term vision. She outlined her vision for Ethereum’s future, referencing Stewart Brand’s pace-layering model and emphasizing the importance of decentralization across multiple network layers.
Miyaguchi also reaffirmed EF’s commitment to the “philosophy of subtraction,” a strategy designed to prevent centralization by empowering independent teams rather than consolidating control within the foundation.
The formation of the Silviculture Society, combined with the donation to Pertsev’s defense fund and Miyaguchi’s leadership transition, reflects the Ethereum Foundation’s ongoing efforts to preserve the integrity of Ethereum while upholding its foundational values.
